What is SURS?

A retirement system provided for the benefit of staff members and employees of Illinois public higher education including universities, colleges, scientific surveys, and other related agencies.

The Retirement Planning Workbook offers comprehensive information such as eligibility, contributions, the retirement benefit portion of each plan, disability, survivor benefits, death benefits, a Q&A and much, much more.

You must elect a plan option within the 6-month deadline or your plan defaults to the Traditional Plan. You cannot change your election once you have made it or it has defaulted, even if you leave and come back to the program.
