1 Student groupings (e.g., ESL, first generation, honors, and underprepared students) are identifiable by their shared unique needs apart from gender and race/ethnicity. Such groupings allow an institution to target services to students who share similar needs.
2 Examples of academic needs include basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, and assistance for students with learning disabilities or English language development needs. Needs may also include greater academic challenge for students eligible for honors programs or courses.
3 Examples of social/personal needs include personal counseling, financial advice, mentoring, or group affiliation.
4 Safety includes both physical safety, psychological safety (i.e., the absence of discrimination or harassment based on identification with a particular race, ethnic group, or sexual orientation), and protection of personal information to prevent identity theft crimes.
